Nick's Images at the

GARSDALE STATION EXHIBITION

In 2008, a huge restoration program was undertaken at Garsdale Station. The Friends of The Settle & Carlisle Railway were instrumental in driving this wonderful program.

In 2009 I was asked to provide some images to be used on the new displays located in both waiting rooms. The stunning displays were designed by local designer Pam Harrington.
To mark the completion of the work at Garsdale, an opening ceremony was held in April 2009. The ceremony also included the unveiling of the memorial to Ruswarp, the courageous and very loyal Border Collie who belonged to Graham Nuttall the co-founder of The Friends of The Settle $ Carlisle Railway.

Graham was one of the co-founders that organised the fight that successfully campaigned to stop the closure of The Settle and Carlisle. Graham was tragically killed whilst walking in the mountains of Wales with Ruswarp. His body was found in the Spring several months later with a very weak and terribly thin Ruswarp still standing guard over Graham. Read the full story here.
The displays are located on both platforms and you can visit them at any time. There is no footbridge at Garsdale and to change platforms entails a short walk via the Old Coal Road to reach the other side. There is a manned Signal Box and the toilets are probably the best I have encountered on any railway!

Garsdale is a wonderful Station, surrounded by stunning scenery and with a hugely rich history. Enjoy your visit!
